December 7th, 2016 was Pearl Harbor’s 75th anniversary. Check out how veterans in Hawaii were commemorating this crucial day in America’s history here:
Why was Pearl Harbor such an important event in WWII for Americans?
While the rest of the world was at war with each other, the United States was choosing to stay away from the conflict and keep peace at home. On December 7th, 1941 the military base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was bombed by the Empire of Japan. This military base was not anticipating an attack as the military branches had miscommunication over which branches should be protecting the base. After the brutal attack that killed over 1500 people, the United States had finally become united in their decision to be part of the war, as congress was on the fence about joining the cause. On December 8th, congress signed the declaration of war and America had officially entered the fight to protect their home ground.
